You Look Like a Thing and I Love You by Janelle Shane, written in 2019 is a non-fiction book about AI and its state at the time. I learned of this book through the Acknowledgements section of Service Model by Adrian Tchaikovsky and was glad I picked it up.
The book gives a very approachable overview of what AI is and might be in reality, vs what we've learned from science fiction. It walks through a variety of different concepts that make up the 'AI' of our current timeline and their strengths and weaknesses. The book is somewhat outdated, due to the rapid advancements in LLMs and other AI related research, but it still provides a good foundation for understanding the reason why ChatGPT might accidentally list rocks as an ingredient on that recipe you were hoping to make for Christmas.
The author Janelle Shane has a light-hearted approach to the subject matter, and keeps the complex content interesting. This book will not keep the interest of someone who's been keeping up with AI advancements, but is a good read for anyone looking to get a primer on AI and better understand where this new set of technologies is heading.
